Today, the world mourns the death of Pope Francis, who passed away peacefully in the Vatican at the age of 88. Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he became the first pope from the Americas and the first Jesuit to lead the Catholic Church when elected in 2013. His papacy was marked by humility, simplicity, and an unwavering commitment to social and environmental justice.

A champion of compassion

Often referred to as “the people’s pope,” Francis was known for his deep empathy and progressive voice within the Church. He reached out to the marginalised, defended the rights of refugees and the poor, and advocated for more inclusive attitudes towards LGBTQ+ individuals, famously asking, “Who am I to judge?” His actions and words continually called for a Church that listens, welcomes, and embraces all.

A green Pope

Perhaps one of Pope Francis’s most enduring legacies was his dedication to environmental sustainability. In 2015, he released Laudato Si’, a landmark encyclical that addressed the climate crisis and the moral obligation to care for the Earth. He urged both the faithful and global leaders to act urgently in protecting “our common home.” Under his leadership, the Vatican introduced green initiatives such as solar energy, recycling schemes, and the phasing out of single-use plastics.
